One moment is more dangerous than any ranked match: selling the old phone before confirming every game account is truly linked. Every month, communities fill with players who spent two years as a guest and lost everything at the device switch.
Three kinds of storage
- Local only. Data lives on the phone and dies with the app. The most dangerous pattern, and the most common among players who chose “play as guest”.
- Platform-bound. Google Play Games, Apple Game Center, or a publisher account. Progress sits on a server and can be restored with credentials.
- Third-party bound. Facebook, X, or a publisher-specific login. Often treated as safe, but becomes a problem if the old account is inaccessible.
The safe order before switching
- Open every game’s account menu and confirm the status says linked, not guest.
- Record the player ID and account name, and screenshot the profile page — the most useful evidence in any support ticket.
- Link at least two methods: a platform account plus a publisher email. One can fail; two almost always save you.
- Confirm the recovery email is active and accessible. Players commonly use a school address that has since been deactivated.
- Trigger a manual sync if the game offers one.
- Install the same game on the new device and log in. Do not create a new account before confirming the old one is unrecoverable.
- Verify level, rank and rare items. If anything is missing, contact support before wiping the old device.
- Only then erase data and sell or retire the old phone.
The most common traps
Logging in with the wrong account. Many players own two Google accounts and sign in with the wrong one, then panic. Check the device account list first.
Deleting a game to save space. In some games, uninstalling wipes local data. If the account was never linked, progress goes with it.
Buying an account. This is an ownership transfer that almost always violates terms of service. The seller can still recover the account through the original email.
Android to iPhone. Progress usually transfers, but paid currency does not. Google Play credit does not cross into the Apple ecosystem. Spend the balance before moving.
If progress is already gone
Recovery depends on evidence. What helps most: player ID, account name, approximate creation date, first purchase receipt, and the device model used. Without a player ID, chances are slim because support cannot distinguish accounts. Purchase receipts are the strongest proof — keep the confirmation emails.
Habits that prevent this
Link accounts on day one rather than at high level, update the recovery email whenever your number changes, and keep your player ID somewhere accessible from another device — cloud notes, not just the phone.
FAQ
Is Facebook login still safe for saving progress? Usable, but never as the only method. Add a publisher email or platform account as backup.
Can one account run on two phones? Some games allow it with warnings or session limits. In competitive titles, alternating logins can trigger extra verification.
Does a factory reset erase everything? All local data, yes. Server-side progress survives as long as you remember the credentials.
